Life at Asheville house provides structure as well as flexibility in order to meet the individual needs of each participant. Residents attend high school or college classes, have daily recreation outside of Asheville House, receive counseling and participate in group meetings. Of course there is plenty of time for rest, relaxation, fun and interesting weekend adventures.
An average weekday starts around 7:30 when residents wake up, straighten their rooms and then eat breakfast in the dining room. Students taking virtual high school and college classes meet the educational specialist at the Education Center for morning class work and tutoring.
After lunch participants are taken to either the YMCA or the Montford Recreation Center for gym activities, organized sports, or a workout.
Afternoons are spent in individual and group counseling sessions, studying and completing school assignments, or having reflective time on the beautiful wrap around porches that surround both houses. Dinner is usually followed by group sessions, 12-Step meetings in the community or other planned activities.
Based on the participant’s needs and progress, opportunities to have a part time job or participate in community activities and community service projects are also available. Some participants may wish to enroll in college courses in one of the five local schools in the Asheville area. Mentors help participants in setting goals, planning activities, cultivating their job-seeking skills and ensuring that they meet their obligations.
Age, maturity, and success in Asheville House determine the level of supervision that each individual participant requires. The goal is to increase the level of responsibility and trust in order to prepare the individual for his or her return home.
